The Best Weather App for Running
Every weather app can tell you the temperature. Almost none can tell you what today will cost you in pace. Here's what actually separates a forecast built for runners from a generic one — and how to pick.
What to look for
1. Dew point, not just temperature
Humidity is what stops you shedding heat, and dew point is the honest measure of it. Sixty-five degrees at a 45°F dew point is a fast morning; sixty-five at a 65°F dew point is a slog. Most weather apps show relative humidity, which changes all day as the air warms — dew point barely moves, which is exactly why runners should be reading it.
2. A rating that knows heat costs you pace
Runners pay for conditions in seconds per mile, not in comfort. A rating that already combines heat, dew point, sun and wind into one 0–10 number tells you whether today is a workout day or an easy-effort day before you've talked yourself into the wrong one.
3. Hourly resolution, and the coolest window marked
In summer the difference between 6am and 9am is often the whole run. A daily high tells you nothing useful; you want the next 24–48 hours hour by hour, with the good windows called out, so you can move the session rather than survive it.
4. Sun, UV and shade — not only air temperature
Direct sun on an exposed out-and-back adds real heat load that the air temperature never shows. Cloud cover and UV belong in the picture, especially for long runs and for anyone racing in the middle of the day.
5. Darkness and visibility
A lot of running happens before work and after it. Sunrise and sunset times, and an honest read on fog and low light, decide whether tonight needs a headlamp and something reflective — and whether the route with no sidewalk is a bad idea.
6. Footing, and what to wear
Ice, wet leaves and standing water change the run more than the temperature does. And the feels-like number is only useful if something turns it into a layer plan — runners overdress more than any other group, because dressing for the first mile is dressing wrong for the other nine.

Why isn't a normal weather app good enough for running?
General weather apps answer "do I need a coat." They lead with temperature and relative humidity, usually hide dew point entirely, and never tell you what any of it costs you in pace or what to wear for a hard effort rather than for standing at a bus stop.
What dew point is too high to run in?
Below about 55°F most runners feel nothing. From 60–65°F pace starts to drift and effort climbs, 65–70°F makes a hard session genuinely harder, and above 70°F most coaches would move a workout to easy running or indoors. Those are guidelines, not rules — acclimation shifts every one of them.
Is it better to run in the morning or the evening?
In summer, mornings — the air is coolest just before sunrise and the pavement has had all night to shed heat, while evening runs start on a road that has been baking since noon. In winter it flips, and the warmest, brightest window is usually early afternoon.
