Is It Safe to Ride When Air Quality Is Bad? An AQI Guide
Wildfire smoke and summer smog have turned air quality into a normal part of ride planning. The problem is that a hazy sky tells you very little — some of the worst air looks fine, and some genuinely smoky days are safe enough for an easy hour. The AQI gives you a number to plan around, once you know what the bands actually mean for someone breathing hard.
What the AQI bands mean on a bike
0–50 (Good): No reason to change anything. Ride normally.
51–100 (Moderate): Fine for most people. If you have asthma or react to smoke, keep hard intervals for another day.
101–150 (Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups): Sensitive riders should shorten the ride and drop the intensity. Everyone else can ride, but this is not the day for a personal best.
151–200 (Unhealthy): Cut the outdoor session. If you must ride, keep it short, easy, and away from traffic.
201+ (Very Unhealthy or Hazardous): Take it indoors. No training benefit is worth this.
Why exercise changes the math
At rest you move roughly six litres of air a minute. Riding hard, that can climb past sixty — so an hour of hard effort in moderate air can expose you to more particulate than a whole day of sitting in it.
It gets worse: above easy pace, most people switch from nose to mouth breathing, which skips the nasal filtering that catches larger particles. The fine particulate in wildfire smoke (PM2.5) is small enough to reach deep into the lungs either way, which is why smoke days hit harder than the haze suggests.
The practical consequence is that intensity matters as much as the number. An easy spin at AQI 120 is a different exposure from a threshold workout at the same reading.

Riding smarter on a bad-air day
Check the trend, not just the current value. Smoke plumes move — a 160 at noon can be an 80 by evening, and morning inversions often trap the worst air until the sun breaks them up.
Get away from traffic. Roadside air carries its own load of particulate and nitrogen dioxide on top of whatever is in the regional air, so a quieter route measurably lowers your dose.
Skip the bandana. Cloth face coverings and buffs do nothing for PM2.5, and anything that does filter it makes breathing hard enough that riding in it is unpleasant at best. Adjusting the ride is the better tool.
