Manchester Ride Guide

Manchester has the National Cycling Centre velodrome and, more usefully for road riders, the Peak District starting about forty minutes from the city centre. Head west for flat Cheshire lanes, east for gritstone moors and serious gradient.

Climatology

Cool maritime and famously wet, though the rain is usually persistent drizzle rather than downpour. Summers 57–70°F, winters 36–46°F with frost but little lasting snow at low level. The Pennine moors are consistently colder, wetter and far windier than the city — often by a wide margin.

Season by season

Spring

Mar–May

Improving and often the driest stretch of the year. Moor tops stay cold well into May.

Summer

Jun–Aug

Long evenings and the best window for the high moor roads. Rain still arrives without much warning.

Autumn

Sep–Nov

Wet and increasingly windy. Lights and mudguards from September onward.

Winter

Dec–Feb

Stick to the Cheshire lanes. The high passes hold ice and cloud for weeks at a time.

Signature rides

Cheshire Lanes Loop

35 mi
Best with headwind: SW

Flat to gently rolling on quiet hedged lanes. The all-weather option and the local club standard.

Snake Pass

44 mi
Best with headwind: E

The classic Pennine crossing, a long steady climb onto open moor. Fully exposed at the top and frequently closed by winter weather.

Holme Moss

52 mi
Best with headwind: NE

A hard moorland climb used by the Tour de France in 2014. Big views, no shelter, and weather that turns fast.
