Tel Aviv Ride Guide
Tel Aviv rides on two things: the car-free Yarkon park path that runs from the sea inland, and the flat coastal plain that lets you put in real distance before the heat arrives. The climbing is east, in the Judean foothills. Everything else is about the sea breeze and the hour of the day.
Climatology
Mediterranean and coastal. Summers are hot and very humid at 75–88°F with essentially no rain from June to September. Winters are mild at 48–65°F with rain arriving in short heavy bursts rather than all-day drizzle. A westerly sea breeze builds through most afternoons; in spring and autumn a sharav (hamsin) can reverse that with dry desert air off the east and push temperatures well past 95°F.
Season by season
Spring
Mar–MayThe best riding of the year, interrupted by sharav days. When the wind turns easterly and dry, ride early or not at all.
Summer
Jun–SepDawn only. Humidity, not the thermometer, is what ends rides here — carry more water than the distance suggests.
Autumn
Oct–NovHumidity breaks and the roads empty out. The second great window, with the first rains at the end of it.
Winter
Dec–FebMild enough for shorts on plenty of days. Watch the radar — the rain comes hard and brief, and the roads flood fast.
Signature rides
Yarkon Park River Path
14 miCar-free riverside path from the sea inland toward Tel Afek. Flat, shaded in stretches, and the default when the wind is up on the coast.
North to Herzliya
26 miFlat, fast riding up the Sharon plain through Ramat Aviv and out past Herzliya. Go out early — the afternoon westerly turns the return into work.
Ben Shemen Forest and Latrun
50 miEast off the plain into the Judean foothills, where the road finally starts to rise. The local long day, and best done in winter or spring.
