Privacy Policy

RideByWeather ("we", "us") turns the weather at your location into a ride score and guidance for cyclists, runners, and walkers. This policy explains what data we collect, why, and how we handle it — across our website, mobile apps, and the Garmin Connect IQ app.

Information we collect

  • Account information. Your email address, an optional display name, and a password (stored only as a salted hash — we never store your plain password).
  • Location data. When you request a ride score, map, nearby stops, or headwind/tailwind, your device sends GPS coordinates (and, while moving, your heading) to our servers, and we use them to compute results for that request. While you are recording a ride or sharing a live session, your position is sampled continuously so we can build the route track. We do not track your location when you are not using the app.
  • Recorded rides & fitness data. If you record a ride, we save it to your account so it appears on all your devices: the full GPS track, distance, speed, elevation, duration, any laps and stops, your notes, and — if you pair a sensor — heart rate. Ride history is kept until you delete it.
  • Saved places and safety information. Routes and ride spots you save, hazard reports you submit, incident reports you file, and any emergency contacts you add (their name and, if you enter them, email address and phone number).
  • Device pairing. On a Garmin device you sign in by approving a short pairing code; the device stores an access token, not your password.
  • Preferences. Settings such as your bike type and units, used to tune your score.
  • Payment information. If you subscribe, payments are processed by Stripe. We receive your subscription status but never your full card details.
  • Usage & analytics. Basic, privacy-respecting analytics (Google Analytics) about how the website is used, subject to your cookie-consent choice.

How we use your information

We use your information only to:

  • compute your ride score, conditions, headwind/tailwind, and clothing guidance;
  • show nearby restrooms and food stops for your location;
  • record, save, and show your rides and their statistics back to you;
  • send the weather alerts and reminders you switch on;
  • create and secure your account and keep you signed in;
  • process subscriptions and provide support;
  • maintain and improve the service.

We do not sell your personal data, and we do not use your location for advertising.

Service providers we share data with

To deliver the service we send the minimum necessary data to trusted providers:

  • Weather data providers — to obtain forecasts for your coordinates.
  • Mapbox — to render the map image for your area.
  • OpenStreetMap / Overpass — to find nearby restrooms and food stops.
  • Stripe — to process payments.
  • Hosting & database providers — to run the service and store your account.
  • Google Analytics — website usage analytics (with your consent).

We may also disclose information if required by law.

Data retention & your rights

We keep your account data while your account is active. One-off location lookups — a ride score, a forecast, a nearby-stops search — are used to answer that request and are not logged as a location history. Rides you choose to record are different: they are saved to your account, with their full GPS track, until you delete them or close your account. You can delete any individual ride at any time from Ride History.

You can request access to or correction of your data at any time by contacting us. You can permanently delete your account and all associated data yourself from our account deletion page or from Settings in the app. Deletion is immediate and removes your rides, routes, preferences, and personal data from our systems; billing records are retained by our payment processor as required by law.

Emails, and how to stop them

We send two kinds of email. Account email — password resets, account activation, and emergency SOS alerts to the contacts you nominated — is part of the service and is sent whether or not you have opted out. Everything else, such as the weekly ride outlook, is optional: turn it off with the Email switch in Settings or with the unsubscribe link in the footer of any of those emails, which works without logging in. We do not sell your email address or send you mail on behalf of anyone else.

Security & children

We use industry-standard measures (encrypted connections, hashed passwords, scoped access tokens) to protect your data. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to keep your information safe.

RideByWeather is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information.

Attributions & data sources

RideByWeather is built with open and third-party data, used under their respective licenses and terms:

  • Maps — map rendering © Mapbox.
  • Map & place data — © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database License (ODbL). Nearby restrooms, food stops, and medical locations are queried from OpenStreetMap via the Overpass API.
  • Restroom data — some restroom listings are sourced from RefugeRestrooms, a community-contributed database. Cleanliness indicators are estimates, not first-hand ratings.
  • Weather — forecasts are provided by third-party weather data providers.

Trademarks, logos, and product names (such as Mapbox, OpenStreetMap, Garmin, and Stripe) belong to their respective owners and are referenced for identification only.
